5 Signs Your Fuel System Needs Attention

Whether you’re running HFO or MGO, or diesel, the health of your fuel system directly impacts engine performance, emissions and operating costs.

Yet over time even the best maintained systems are vulnerable to contamination, sludge buildup and microbial growth, all of which can lead to costly downtime of fuel systems.

At Marlin Environmental Services, we work with operators to diagnose and prevent problems before they escalate.

Here are 5 signs your fuel system might need vital maintenance before it costs you:

1.Clogged or Discoloured Filter

Fuel filters are the first line of defence, capturing contaminants before they reach sensitive parts of the fuel system like the engine.

If you’re finding dark, sludgy residue or frequent clogging, it usually means the system is contaminated. The buildup is a result of microbial growth (the diesel bug) in your fuel tanks. If left untreated it can cause engine power loss, unstable fuel pressure or complete engine shutdowns.

Regular fuel polishing and tank cleaning removes water, microbial growth and sediments before they reach filters.

2.Unstable Engine Performance or Smoke

When engines start to act up and behave unpredictably, it is often more than just a mechanical issue. Contaminated or water-laden fuel can disrupt combustion quality resulting in incomplete burning and higher emissions. Symptoms can include reduced power output, noticeable vibrations or black or white smoke from exhaust.

It is recommended conducting a full inspection of your fuel delivery system, checking centrifuge performance and sample fuel for water and microbial contamination.

3.Water or Sediment Detected in Fuel Tanks

Water is the biggest enemy of clean fuel. It enters through condensation, leaks or poor storage practices, creating the perfect environment for microbial growth which creates sludges, acids and corrosive byproducts. Over time this can lead to corrosion of tank interiors and clogged filters.

4.Strong Fuel Smells or Sludges

If you’re noticing strong fuel odors or visible sludge floating in your fuel tanks, then there’s a problem. Residue often appears sticky and a tar-like layer caused by oxidation over time, inadequate circulation or overheating or mixing of fuels.

5.Reduced Efficiency and Rising Fuel Consumption

Prevention is cheaper than recovery…

The reality is that most fuel problems are preventable with consistent monitoring and maintenance.

At Marlin, we support with:

  • Fuel tank cleaning and sludge removal
  • Fuel polishing
  • Water separation
  • Waste management and disposal compliance

We conduct fuel tank inspections and testing on site to create a tailored fuel system maintenance plan, keeping your fuel tanks clean and systems operating efficiently.
