Restoring Performance of Gas Turbine Engines

The Task:

Our customer, a global provider of low-emission, high-efficiency microturbine systems, relies on the consistent performance of its gas turbine engines to deliver clean and reliable energy to commercial, industrial, and utility sectors. When several of their systems began showing signs of reduced efficiency, the customer identified the gas turbine recuperators as the source of the issue.

The customer required a specialized restoration process to return their recuperators to optimal condition and restore the turbines to full operational performance.

What We Did:

Marlin undertook a complete restoration process at our state of the art engineering workshop, beginning with thorough cleaning of the recuperators in our high-capacity ultrasonic bath. This cleaning method allowed for deep removal of internal fouling and deposits, including those located in narrow or complex passages where manual cleaning is ineffective.

Following ultrasonic cleaning, each recuperator (6 in total) was repassivated using an acid treatment, restoring the protective oxide layer on the stainless-steel surface, for long-term corrosion resistance and durability. The recuperators underwent a detailed engineering inspection. Our team assessed material condition and wear patterns, compiling a full technical report that documented the condition of the components.

The Outcome:

Once reconditioned, the recuperators were securely packaged and returned to the customer’s site. All units operated at full performance, restoring system efficiency and supporting continuous operation of the customer’s systems.

Using a combination of ultrasonic cleaning systems and vapour blasting equipment, we remove contaminants, corrosion, scaling, oils, and deposits to restore components to near-new condition. Our processes allow clients to extend the service life of their equipment, reduce replacement costs, and return critical systems to operation quickly and efficiently.

Our engineering workshop handles components from a wide range of industries. We regularly receive equipment from both onshore facilities and offshore vessels, such as pipework, pumps, valves, fittings, filtration units, and heat-transfer components.
